Promoting Awareness and Treatment For Mental Health Conditions

There are many mental health organizations that strive to raise awareness and provide resources for those suffering from mental illness. These organizations have been around for a long time, but their purpose is not new. The first organizations were created to help those who suffered from physical illness and were struggling to make the best of their lives. Mental illness has been with us for as long as there have been humans on the planet. It has a difficult road ahead of us, but there are organizations out there that can help you find the road less travelled.

Mental Health Organizations

One such mental health organization dedicated to preventing mental illness is the National Mental Health Association. They work with state and local governments to promote awareness and education about mental health. They also provide free information, support and referral services for those in need. Many mental illnesses do not show themselves until a person is much older, which makes it even more important for us to intervene and prevent mental illnesses from becoming an epidemic. Because the number of people affected by mental illness is rising every year, we must ensure that we all do our part to stop the epidemic before it’s too late.

In addition to mental health organizations, there are also national organizations dedicated to this cause. One of these is the American Association of Retired Persons, or AARP. This national organization focuses on everything that affects retired persons, including education, retirement planning and community outreach. The AARP offers national leadership development training seminars to members to teach them how to build and maintain successful retirement communities.

Best Mental Health Organizations

Another group of mental health organizations is the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA is part of the federal government’s Center of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (CSAMH), which is a division of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SEMA). SAMHSA is a nonprofit organization that works to enhance the nation’s public safety by addressing problems that promote mental health and substance abuse. SAMHSA also coordinates the nation’s response to emergencies that involve drug or alcohol abuse. The mission of SAMHSA is to provide evidence-based, systematic service for victims, their families and communities.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), an agency of the federal government, is another of the nation’s mental health organizations. NIMH is a private, not for profit organization. Like other mental health organizations, NIMH educates the public about mental health disorders and provides support for research in the field. In addition to its three main research centers, NIMH publishes a peer-reviewed journal, publishes a series of booklets, and distributes a variety of publications related to mental health. Among its many publication offerings are a bi-monthly magazine, a textbook, a collection of policy statements, and a book on the treatment of clinical depression. Because most insurance companies are required to cover treatments of depression, mental health organizations like NIMH provide funding to qualifying mental health centers and facilities.

Many Organizations Offer Nonprofit Entities

In addition to these three major mental health organizations, there are many other nonprofit entities that provide support to those who suffer from mental health problems. Among these entities is the National Alliance for Mental Illness and Behavior Therapy (NAMbid). Since its formation in 1985, NAMib has been a strong advocate for improved treatment of mental health disorders through a system of multidisciplinary practices that bring together psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nutritionists and other health care professionals. Because of its focus on research and education, NAMbid is among the most selective of all mental health organizations in the United States.

One of the other mental health organizations that is growing in size and influence is the newly formed Anxiety Disorders Treatment Centers (ADTC). Founded in 1988, ADTC is part of the National Association for the Treatment of Mental Illnesses (NAM). According to its official website, “The goal of the Anxiety Disorders Treatment Centers (ADTCC) is to create a community surrounding the individual with the disease, so that he or she is empowered to participate constructively in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of others.” Since its founding, the centers have been able to significantly reduce the stigma attached to mental illness and depression. By doing so, they have been able to raise awareness about this illness and to provide important resources to those who suffer from it.
